Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time
— Thomas Merton

I am primarily interested in story telling through the painting of the figure and nature. Inspiration can come from anywhere; a book that I’m reading, a magazine that I’m flicking through or even something I listen to on a podcast. As a child I read many books and play mostly involved my imagination, often creating my own magical world to exist in and painting feels like an extension of those magical memories.

There are many stages to my process which can last for months or even a year. I usually develop an idea through a series of paintings, working on a core group to start and adding as I go along. My reference material is usually found images and I use photoshop to build up a story and also to work out composition so I have a collage of references to base the final painting on. I do use sketchbooks but mostly for notes and thumbnail or rough sketches but this too is an important part of the process.

The studio is where painting takes place but it also feels like a sacred and magical place, a space for making sense of something deep inside whilst hopefully creating something that others will find pleasure and meaning from.
